I have tried jellied eels and they were horrible. The eels your grandad had were probably fried or sometimes smoked which are quite good .We used to call eels snigs.

Eel Soup is well known over North Germany: you will get in in Hamburg.

The Rathaus (sort of Town Hall) in Bremen, Germany had a restaurant whose specialty was Aalsuppe (eel soup): served with a bowl of vinegar. You alternate a spoonful of soup with a spoonful of vinegar!

Back in the sixties my next door neighbour (my mate's dad) used to go fishing at the marine lake in Southport. He constantly bought back young eels which were called snig in Wigan. Very tasty when fried and a bit of salt.
Occasionally he would bring back a huge conger eel - he showed one to me one evening - it wasn't dead and bit him quite severely!

I used to catch them in in the Ribble and Lancaster canal. My dad told me they used to catch them in ponds and folk used the skins for sprains just like knitbone. The only pond I remember them being caught in was what we called the perch pond near the golf links in Hindley and they were quite big.

Retep 1949... yes the skins were used like knitbone (Comfrey - the plant). More recently fish skin is used in many other medical issues, including treating burns, even 3rd degree burns. It's amazing that plants and animal residues have the potential to cure or ease human illnesses and results of severe accidents. People campaign to eradicate poisonous or dangerous animal and plant species - but lets take Foxglove for instance - it can kill if you eat it but it can be made into medicine to help heart complaints. That's just one example. We need every animal and plant regardless of how people argue who find them dangerous!
